Halloween In The Philippines

Halloween is one of the occasion the younger people are always looking forward to comes the end of October. It is not so popular here with the older generation as it is not originally a part of Filipino culture. We only acquired it from the West. It may be a borrowed practice of other cultures but nevertheless, it is something we enjoy just the same.

When I was young, I used to associate Halloween with horror and ghost stories, of vampires and other creepy creatures. I thought it is a time that these bad creatures go out to capture children and eat their heart and liver. Now I realized, my mother have only told me of these silly things so I won't go out of the house.

Normally, our western counterparts do trick and treat but it is seldom practice here. For the Filipinos, Halloween is all about partying, cool Halloween costumes, booze and a lot of merriment. Every time it approaches, the malls are also being adorned with creepy decorations.

Just recently, a friend of mine organized a Halloween party. And as we usually do, the Halloween costume contest is one of the highlights aside from the entertainment. This is one thing I love about attending this event. It is one of the occasion I dare not miss to witness as the creativity of Filipinos unfolds before my eyes. These costumes used to scare me before as they were seem so real. But now I noticed that Halloween costumes evolved. They are now themed and getting sexier more than ever each year. Last year, they did the Pirates of the Caribbean theme. My favorites were the Captain Jack Sparrow costume and that of Elizabeth Swann. They were both hot and sexy. I am a little bias here because the pirate Captain Jack Sparrow is my favorite character in the movie. I know everybody will agree with me.

This year, they did the creepy theme again inspired by the popular horror movies like The Ring and Scream. Well have you seen Sadako wear a headband? Well, at least I already saw her face :) I really don't like the ghost mask. It makes me feel like somebody would emerge from nowhere and stab me. But you know what makes these creepy creatures hot? They put a twist to their costumes. Like a zombie in cowboy boots (not so fashionable anyway). Have you seen a white lady donning a very sexy lingerie or a witch in a two piece bikini perhaps? They look so cute believe me. People's creativity is boundless. I wonder what surprise they have in store for next year's contest. I can't wait for these creepy and sexy creatures in their new costumes again.
