Last Monday I woke up to my parents' unintelligible argument over breakfast.  It went on for five minutes.  When I get to the table to have my meal, the two of them were already in truce.  My mother having finished her food left my father, me  and my sisters at the table.  When she was already out of hearing, he complained how stubborn she can get sometimes.  Me and my sisters just exchanged knowing looks.

For as long as I can remember, this has been the norm in their life together. One is complaining how impossible the other one  is without knowing that they both have the same thing to say to each other.  They are not your sweet couple who would whisper sweet nothings to each other's ears.  They would argue over trivial matters.  From how to cook the eggs to who will get up to get some water.  It is a miracle that they have lasted for 33 years of marriage when they have  nothing good to say to each other.  I have never seen my father gave my mother chocolates, roses  or anything typical to all couples who want to show affection towards their beloved.  He had never dated her on Valentine's Day!  And I had never seen her kissed him affectionately.  Come to think of it.

Are they happy?  Would you consider them having a successful married life?  By God's grace, they have produced 7 children.  All grown-up now  and still have their marriage solidly intact.  In fact they will be celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary on December 27, 2009.

No one will ever think that this kind of marriage will last judging by the standards you can read in magazines and books.  But they are able to show that conforming with the standards set by the experts is not a guarantee to make the marriage last.

What is their secret?  I have yet to know.

Got nothing to do today.  I check my Friendster and stumbled upon my horoscope. Hmm, I like this one.

The Bottom Line

Pay attention to your dreams; they hold messages that deepen your understanding.

In Detail

You're a curious one, all right. You want to know how this works and how that works. This curiosity for the world around you is one of your most valuable assets. It guarantees that you'll stay interested and engaged (and thereby fulfilled) your whole life long. So get out there and find answers to some of your questions today!

If there is one thing that will make me smile as a child, it is the Tootsie Roll.  A chewy bar I always have as a present from my mother every time she went to town.  Aside from the fact that I am a sweet tooth, I love it because it's soft and chewy.  Only thinking about it makes my mouth water (though it makes my jaw ached from chewing for a long time.)

As I grow up, I almost forget about it because I can no longer see Tootsie Roll being sold at stores.  Not until recently when my sister bought me 5 bars.  I haven't gave up my craziness for this sweet bar yet.  When I put it in my mouth, my memories flooded back.  It seems that it was only yesterday that I have my pockets full of those chewy bars.  I can't resist myself from buying a dozen bars.  I filled my pocket, closed my eyes and savor the feeling of being a ten-year old kid again.  It's exhilarating!

When I was a kid, my happiness depended on these sweet bars.  I used to cry every time my mother leave home.  To appease me, she would bring me a box  of these chewy treat.  My day will brighten up as long as I have those luscious bars in my pocket.  But until now I have this unanswered question, are Tootsie Rolls candies, chocolates or caramels?

I wish everything is just as simple as it used to be.  But it is impossible now.  As I grow up everything becomes complicated.  If only I could bring back time.  I wish to be a child again.

Today is holiday here in the Philippines The Islam believers are celebrating Edl Fitr, a holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting which is one of the greatest religious observances in Islam.  The whole nation is also commemorating the day of Martial Law declaration under the Marcos regime.  It was declared on September 21, 1972 by virtue of Proclamation 1081.  I was not yet born at that time.  I only knew about it from my father and later from history books.  My father has nothinf but bad memories of this era.  There were a lot of human rights violation and abuse of power.  He was even an eye-witness to these abuses.

Well, whatever had happened before, whatever has been its effects on our lives, it belonged already to the past.  It is already a part of the Philippine history.  We should leave it behind us but we must not forget the lessons we have learned from it.  Everytime I look back in that fateful part of history, it makes me appreciate more the freedom I have now.  Thanks to all the Filipinos who gave up their lives to restore this democracy every breathing Filipinos are enjoying.  Cheers for freedom!

P.S.

Happy birthday to all Martial Law babies.

Erika, Eleonor and I are supposed to put up and decorate our Christmas tree today as we have agreed.  But what I saw last night when I got home from Cotabato City surprised me.  I saw our little Christmas tree standing and fully decorated.  The Christmas lights are also in their place.  I was a little disappointed though, as i was looking forward for this day to decorate our tree with my siblings to make it one of our memorable bonding moments.

I asked my sisters who did the decorating.  They answered that it was our mother.  Like myself, they are a little bit disapponted.  We feel like we miss something special this year.  We cannot take the tree down and re-decorate it with our own touch, for fear that in so doing, we might hurt our Nanay's feelings.  We can't do anythig about it anymore but just look at the tree.  We just wish ourselves that we will have a better luck next year.  :)

Life is not always what we expect it to be.  It is always full of surprises.  Sometimes it brings tears. sometimes it will bring you smiles.  But no matter what it will bring us, we should have a strong heart as a defense.  Whatever life will give us, we should welcome it with open heart.  Embrace it with two arms  spread wide open.

We should live life the way it should be lived if not, then it will have its way of playing its game on us.  Thus, leaving us wallowing in misery.  Life is unpredictable.  As the going gets tough, Jason once said, we should hope for the best but expect for the worse.  Battling trials is not as easy as learning our ABCs.  We should master its every corner and aspect to develop the best weapon to counter these trials.   As we do, we may make mistakes along the way.  Do not be disheartened, we should not give up but get up instead, pick up the pieces of our shattered dreams and keep going.

In the end you will see, that despite the broken wings, scraped knees and bruises, our heart becomes strong.  Our character finely molded by experiences making us better persons than what we once used to be.  We may be wounded but we are survivors.  Masters in the battle of life.

I am soooo happy! I want to sing. I am smiling like crazy all day. Singing songs at the top of my voice , never have a care in the world if I am singing it right or I'm already out of tune. Suddenly I noticed everything around me looks beautiful. I take time to smell the fragrance of the flowers I pass along the way. It is only now I see the beauty of the fluttering butterflies that go from flower to flower. I am able to hear the chirping birds, nature's own songs. I love to listen to them. Everything I see makes me happy.
And while I am in this state of euphoria, there is only one person who comes in my mind. He is the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning when I open my eyes and the last thing before I close my eyes to sleep at night. Who is he? Hmmmmm.....I am not telling. I am wondering, am I in love?????????

Around 9 o'clock in the evening, I was peacefully lying on my bed when the radio blasted the most horrifying news I've ever heard in my entire life.  The North and South Towers of the World Trade Center, the world's greatest financial district, the symbol of America's power and prosperity were attacked by a terrorist cell.  Also attacked was the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, America's nerve center.  According to the news, four planes were used in these coordinated attacks but only three succeeded in their evil mission.  The other one crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.  They said its main target was the White House in Washington, D.C. but the pilot fought the terrorists so they crashed in Pennsylvania instead.
I was stunned with what I saw on TV.  It broke my heart to see those horrible footages of the attacks.  The chaos, the death of innocents, the clouds of smoke, the collapse of the buildings.  I couldn't believe them all.  All were hysterical.  It's just as if I was watching a movie like Independence Day.  But this is different.  What's unfolding before my eyes was not scripted.  I even slapped and pinched myself to be sure that I am not only dreaming. I feel pain. It was terrifyingly real.
In my mind, I am asking why.  Why such a powerful and prosperous country be attacked in such an inhumane way?  I grieved over the death  of thousands of people.  President George W. Bush addressed what happened as evil and cowardly acts.  I condemned the terrorists who have done it.  The loss of lives and the destruction of structures were overwhelming.  I am scared not for myself but for my country.  What if it will happen to us?  We are so powerless in the face of terroristic attacks.  I hope our government will do something to secure our country.  But sad to say, our politicians are very busy with their political charade on the stage.  Sad to say this but they're using the Senate and the House of Representatives.  They're throwing mud at each other's faces to the extent that I no longer know who's accusing who.  I am greatly disappointed that sometimes I am asking myself, why I was born a Filipino?  I am losing my pride in the midst of this chaotic and dirty politics.  But if I think of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, Ninoy Aquino and Cory Aquino my morale gets a boost and also the Edsa People Power Revolution wherein my fellow Filipinos were able to oust a dictator in the person of Ferdinand A. Marcos through peaceful means.
I feel like squeezing the necks of some of these politicians who do nothing but advance their political career at the expense of million starving Filipinos.  Investigation here, there and everywhere with vague results or none at all.  I am sorry to know that we have them who only wanted a great deal of publicity in the guise of exposes which their veracity I doubted.  I am ashame, greatly embarassed not only to myself but to the millions of Filipinos, to the people around the world and most especially to the future generation.  Is this the kind of legacy that we would be leaving to them?

Today maybe an ordinary day but for the Roman Catholic Church, it is one of the most important day because today is the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is the day when Notre Dameans hold activities in the honor of Our Lady. Being a Notre Damean myself, I also celebrate and give importance to this day as it became a part of my life. I have been a Notre Damean and proud to be since I was 12. I attended Notre Dame schools from high school to college. They are Notre Dame of Edcor and Notre Dame of Midsayap College respectively. It has been a family tradition for us. So every time this day comes, I can't help reminiscing my 8 years inside Catholic institutions that mold me and made me what I am today. I strive to be a living testimony of my schools' vision-mission. For me to make a positive difference wherever I am. Even though I am no longer in school, in my heart, I am a Notre Damean and always will be. To my fellow Notre Dameans, HAPPY NOTRE DAME DAY!
And if you can still sing and remember by heart what is written below, you really are a true blooded Notre Damean. A Notre Damean spirit is still alive and burning inside you.
Notre Dame, Our Mother
Notre Dame, our Mother
Tender, strong and true
Proudly in the heavens,
Gleams thy gold and blue.
Glory's mantle cloaks thee
Golden is thy fame,
And our hearts forever,
Praise thee, Notre Dame.
And our hearts forever,
Love thee, Notre Dame.

Though I am not really a believer of horoscope as this is against my religion but i just can't resist posting here what is written today.

The Bottom Line

Fighting for what you believe requires sacrifice from time to time -- maybe today.

In Detail

You'll be charmed by foreign accents today -- to you, they symbolize a different set of experiences and a type of insight you wish you had. Start a candid conversation with a new foreign person in your life and learn about their life. A short and sweet talk is all it takes to connect with someone who comes from a totally different background than yours. And while they are inspiring you, you will be inspiring them.

I was in the Office of Pag IBIG yesterday to process my calamity loan. There were a lot of people who were also doing the same. I stayed outside waiting for my priority number to be called, since I can't stand the crowd inside. While trying to beat my boredom, I looked around hoping to see something entertaining in that place. I saw this tarpaulin posted on one of the walls. It has some tips on gas and automobile conservation. I find it informative, useful and worth sharing to everyone. I can't resist myself from copying it.  Here it is:

  • Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving wastes gasoline.
  • Replace clogged air filters to protect your engine and to improve gas mileage by as much as 10%.
  • Set regular tune up and car maintenance checks to avoid fuel economy problems.
  • Keep tires properly inflated and aligned to improve your gasoline mileage by around 3.3%.
  • Clear out your car.  Extra weight decreases mileage.

I hope you find it informative as I do.  Have a nice day and happy driving.
You might be wondering why I have greeted you so early. Some of you may think that I am very excited with the yuletide season. Yes you are right. I am as giddy as an eight year old child. But aside from that, today is the first day of the month of September. The beginning of the "BER" months. Here in the Philippines, the first day of September marks the beginning of the Yuletide Season. It is during this time that Pinoys, as we call ourselves are starting to put Christmas decors in our homes. You will hear Christmas songs being played on the air. And the shopping malls are starting to display and sell Christmas decors.

I and my friends have this tradition that whoever greets first on the first day of September should receive a gift on Christmas day. To get advantage, I used to hide from them so they won't see me. And when they're approaching, I will go out of my hiding place and greet them giving them no chance to say a word. But since I already transferred to a new job, my colleagues do not know about it. Oh I miss those moments.

In our own home, we are also starting to decorate our Christmas tree, put on the lights and decors. An activity I enjoy doing with my mother and sisters. It's really a wonderful feeling to see the dancing lights and the picture of laughing Santa Claus and his reindeers. I feel like a child again!
